The Haunted recorded the single at RCA Victor's studio on Guy Street in Montreal following their victory at the Hopsville Battle of the Bands at the Montreal Forum on January 3, 1966. The recording lineup was Bob Burgess, Jurgen Peter, Al Birmingham, Mason Shea and Dave Wynne.

Al Birmingham recalled that ‘1-2-5’ was recorded live without overdubs. Birmingham played through a homemade fuzz box built by Jurgen Peter, contributing substantially to the raw guitar sound of the recording.

The first Quality pressing mistakenly identified the group as The Hunted and also misspelled Jurgen Peter's first name.

‘1-2-5’ reached number 2 on CFCF in Montreal and number 23 nationally on the RPM chart.

The song originally contained a third verse that was considered too explicit, and the band returned to the studio to record a replacement lyric. The Canadian Quality release contains the revised lyric. The original explicit lyric was released in the United States on Amy Records.

This is the original 1966 recording of ‘1-2-5’ featuring Bob Burgess on vocals. The song was recorded again with Johnny Monk for The Haunted's 1967 Trans-World album.
