Information/Write-up
Fludd’s second album, "...On!", released in 1972, is a bold and ambitious step forward in the band’s evolution, embracing British pop and glam rock influences while retaining their strong Canadian rock foundation. Recorded at Manta Sound in Toronto, the album offers a polished mix of infectious melodies, intricate harmonies, and driving rhythms. The band’s style on this record draws clear comparisons to The Beatles, Badfinger, and even The Small Faces, blending catchy choruses with flashes of harder-edged rock.
The lead single, "Always Be Thinking of You," cracked the Canadian Top 40 and helped solidify Fludd’s growing reputation. Meanwhile, "Cousin Mary," one of the band’s most enduring tracks, has since become a classic. It frequently appears on Canadian rock compilations and showcases Fludd’s talent for merging pop sensibilities with a rawer rock edge.
While "...On!" was praised for its adventurous sound and high production value, the album also attracted controversy. Originally titled "Cock On!" and featuring a provocative cover of the band posing as flashers, the concept was quickly vetoed by Daffodil Records’ distributor, Capitol Records. Concerned about a potential backlash, the label renamed the album and swapped the cover for a more cryptic red-and-gold foil design. Despite—or perhaps partly because of—the controversy, the album became a cult favorite among collectors, earning praise for its swagger, clever songwriting, and bold experimentation.
"...On!" captures Fludd at a creative peak, blending the playful energy of glam rock with the melodic craftsmanship of British pop. It stands as a fascinating snapshot of a band unafraid to push boundaries, both musically and visually, cementing its place in Canadian rock history.
