Information/Write-up

Canadian singer and songwriter Timothy Eaton (also credited as Timothy Eaton Harrower) emerged on the national scene in the late 1960s as the lead vocalist and principal frontman of the Marshmallow Soup Group, a Kingston- and Ottawa-based pop-psych and blue-eyed soul group managed by Vern Craig. Eaton joined the band in early 1969, a pivotal moment in the group’s development that coincided with their move into professional studio work, national exposure, and a major-label recording contract.

With Eaton as lead singer, Marshmallow Soup Group signed to RCA Limited through its Sun-Bar Productions imprint and released their debut single, “I Love Candy,” in November 1969. Written by Eaton and produced by Craig, the single became the band’s signature recording, charting strongly in eastern Ontario and reaching the national RPM Top Pop Singles chart in early 1970. During this period, Eaton fronted the group through extensive touring in Canada and abroad, including appearances in Peru, Japan, Mexico, Hawaii, and the United States as part of the band’s role as Goodwill Ambassadors of Canada for the Federal Department of Trade and Commerce.

Following the group’s dissolution in 1971, Eaton embarked on a solo career. He formed a backing band under the name Timothy, featuring Paul Armstrong (drums), Mike Brews (keyboards), Hendrik Riik (bass), and Phil Groves (lead guitar). Although the project produced several singles, none achieved significant commercial success, and Eaton continued to search for a sustainable recording direction.

In the early 1970s, Eaton also recorded under alternate names, including Buster Brown and Tim Harrower, reflecting ongoing attempts to reposition himself within the changing pop and rock marketplace. In addition to his own releases, Eaton contributed backing vocals to recordings by other Canadian artists, including folk-country singer Robert David (1972) and blues-rock singer Cathy Young (1973). His final known recording, “Falling Out of Love,” was completed in 1974.

Some of Eaton’s solo material was associated with Toronto’s Yorkville music scene, including connections to venues such as the Riverboat, reflecting his continued efforts to establish himself within Canada’s singer-songwriter and pop-rock circuits following the breakup of Marshmallow Soup Group.

Although his post-Marshmallow Soup Group solo career did not replicate the chart success of “I Love Candy,” Timothy Eaton remains a notable figure in late-1960s Canadian pop history, best remembered for his role in one of the era’s most distinctive bubblegum-psych crossover hits and for his participation in one of the few Canadian pop groups to combine domestic chart success with government-sponsored international touring.
