Insight

liner notes.....The most exciting, most reviewed, most acclaimed clarinetist to regularly perform in Toronto night clubs during the past several years, Henry Cuesta ranks as one of the foremost exponents of the licorice stick on this or any other continent. Following a stint in the army (where his talents were employed to entertain the troops), Henry joined the house band at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans. The hotel circuit eventually led him to a spot with the Jack Teagarden group with which he toured for a number of years and made five record albums. With Toronto as his home base, Henry has for several years led his own dixieland groups, and co-starred with many of the jazz "greats" at the Colonial, the Golden Nugget and the Town Tavern, among others. On the Saturday night of the week in which this album was taped, Henry was a member of the audience that enjoyed Benny Goodman's guest appearance with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Later that same evening, Mr. Goodman was among the enthusiastic throng at the Colonial applauding the performance of Henry Cuesta, as he concluded a two-week engagement leading his own Goodman-style unit with vibes and a four-man rhythm section. This album finds Henry on yet another plane in which his solo clarinet is supported by a full string orchestra in arrangements especially conceived for this recording.
