Information/Write-up

The debut release by The Asexuals captures the raw energy of Montreal’s early ‘80s punk scene in a tight, four-song blast of brash, fast-paced hardcore with hints of the melodic flair that would later define the band’s sound. Released on the influential OG Music label in 1984, the self-titled EP is a foundational document in the evolution of Canadian punk—lean, confrontational, and fully immersed in the DIY ethos.

Clocking in at just under nine minutes, the EP features three songs written by guitarist Sean Friesen and one by vocalist John Kastner. Tracks like “New World” and “Stand Up” pulse with urgency and punk sneer, while “Where’s the Bus?” burns fast and chaotic in true hardcore fashion. The closer “Stand Up” stands apart for its infectious riff and anthemic feel, signaling the more melodic direction the band would explore on their landmark LP Be What You Want later that same year.

The A-side features “New World” and “B.F.D.” (the latter humorously mislabeled as a DJ remix in some listings due to a known pressing flaw), while the B-side includes “Where’s the Bus?” and “Stand Up.” The back cover tracklist is incorrect—only the label reflects the accurate order.

Recorded at Silent Sound Studios in Montreal, the EP was produced by the band themselves. It was distributed independently via Record Peddler and Bonaparte Records of Canada, and its cover artwork was created by D. Schieder. Only 500 copies were pressed, making original editions highly collectible among Canadian punk archivists.

While The Asexuals would go on to explore broader sonic territory—including pop-punk, post-hardcore, and alternative rock—this EP remains a definitive slice of their hardcore roots: loud, fast, defiant, and proudly suburban.
