Information/Write-up

Ana Black emerged from Kingston, Ontario in 1983 and quickly carved out a reputation as one of Canada’s most flamboyant glam rock and metal outfits. Led by vocalist Mick Scott, with Jesse James (Christen Hanthorn) and Day V Kraze (Dave Frood) on guitars, Ricky Twist (David Daynes) on bass, and Dizzy Bitch (Thom Frood) on drums, the band fused heavy riffs, melodic hooks, and a striking image that placed them firmly in step with the 1980s glam scene.

Their first release was the privately issued Love Kills demo cassette in 1985, followed in 1987 by a second self-titled demo. That same year they reached a wider audience with a self-titled album on Ragged Records, recorded at Northumberland 29 Music Studio and produced, engineered, and mixed by Andy Thompson. Songs such as “She’s a Tease,” “Fight,” and “After the Rain” captured their theatrical style, complemented by Brenda Fleury’s artwork and Bernie Clark’s photography.

In the early 1990s Ana Black relocated to Los Angeles, hoping to break into the heart of the glam metal scene. They capped their output with the 1996 CD EP Dorothy Gale, released on Public Records, before disbanding later that year.

Despite the split, Ana Black’s name has continued to resonate among collectors and fans of Canadian glam rock. Frontman Mick Scott has since revived the band with a new lineup, keeping alive the energy and spectacle that defined their music in the 1980s and 1990s.
