Biography:
Mother Mother is a Canadian indie rock band from Quadra Island, British Columbia, formed in 2005. The group consists of Ryan Guldemond (vocals, guitar), Molly Guldemond (vocals, keyboard), Jasmin Parkin (vocals, keyboard), Ali Siadat (drums), and Mike Young (bass). Known for their dynamic vocal harmonies, genre-defying sound, and introspective lyrics, Mother Mother has established itself as one of Canada's most innovative bands.
The band began under the name Mother and independently released their self-titled debut album in 2005. After signing with Last Gang Records, the album was re-released in 2007 as Touch Up, featuring additional songs and revamped production. Over the years, the band released several critically acclaimed albums, including O My Heart (2008), Eureka (2011), The Sticks (2012), Very Good Bad Thing (2014), No Culture (2017), Dance and Cry (2018), and Inside (2021).
In February 2024, Mother Mother released their ninth studio album, Grief Chapter, marking a new creative peak for the band. The album, which explores themes of life, death, and the freedom that comes with accepting the inevitable, reflects a bold evolution in their sound. It features dynamic tracks like “To My Heart” and “Normalize” that push the boundaries of songwriting and composition. Lead singer and lyricist Ryan Guldemond described the album as an effort to “push things further than ever before,” embracing unconventionality and a raw, emotional edge.
The band attributes much of their recent success to a new generation of fans who discovered their music on TikTok, propelling songs like “Hayloft” and “Arms Tonite” into viral status. This resurgence allowed the band to reconnect with their roots, incorporating experimental elements and bold ideas into their music. Guldemond noted that the viral embrace of their “weirder” songs felt like an invitation to return to their truest artistic identity, which is powerfully reflected in Grief Chapter.
Thematically, Grief Chapter uses death and grief not as morose topics but as reflections on how to live fully and presently. “Life is fleeting, therefore it’s precious,” said Guldemond, emphasizing the album’s central message: to honour life by being true to oneself.
Sonically, Grief Chapter is one of the band’s most powerful offerings, driven by their experiences performing on the biggest stages of their career. The album captures the energy of their live shows and delivers some of their most muscular and impactful songs to date.
Mother Mother’s music has always been about authenticity, a message they echo in their lyrics and interactions with fans. Their enduring ability to evolve artistically, connect with audiences, and remain true to their core identity has solidified their place as a beloved and influential force in modern music.
