Biography:
The Medium: A Forgotten Psychedelic Gem from Montreal
Emerging from the vibrant music scene of Montreal, Quebec, in 1969, The Medium was a short-lived but highly influential psychedelic and progressive rock band. Known for their dreamy, druggy vocals, swirling guitars, and powerful fuzz-laden outbursts, they created an album that stands as one of the most adventurous and unique releases of the late 1960s Canadian psychedelic era. Their self-titled album, released on the small Gamma Records label, is often cited as one of the first albums in Quebec to explore progressive rock territory.
The band’s sound is a kaleidoscope of influences, blending elements of psych, acid rock, jazz, and early prog, with comparisons often drawn to Soft Machine, Iron Butterfly, The Doors, and the American band Listening. The organ-heavy arrangements, complex compositions, and fuzz-drenched guitars give the album a distinct sound that was ahead of its time. While most tracks were instrumental, there are moments of atmospheric balladry featuring Robert Ellis’s deep, soulful vocals and haunting harmonica.
The Medium recorded their album in Montreal in 1969, at the same time as labelmates Anthony Green & Barry Stagg, under the guidance of producer Daniel Lazare. With Jim Solkin penning all the music and lyrics, the album is a testament to the experimental spirit of the era, blending progressive structures with psychedelic textures. Tracks range from swirling instrumental jams to eerie ballads, with standout organ and fuzz guitar solos that push boundaries.
The Medium's only album stands out as a landmark of Canadian psych and progressive music, filled with swirling organ passages, fuzzed-out guitar solos, and intricate percussion. The album’s final track has drawn comparisons to Soft Machine’s Volume II for its experimental approach and complex arrangements. Despite its obscurity, the album has gained a cult following among collectors and psychedelic enthusiasts for its adventurous and innovative sound.
