Born and raised on Prince Edward Island, Artie MacLaren moved to Toronto in 1962 to pursue his career as a country singer and musician. He quickly became a driving force on the Toronto music scene, performing at local clubs with his back-up band The Mustangs, and playing guitar on sessions for various artists produced by Ben Weatherby on the famed ARC Records label. In 1965 he released his debut album on ARC and scored a #1 hit on Canadian charts with his single "Skip, Hop & Wobble". He also played with Mickey McGivern & The Mustangs.
Artie MacLaren went on to record a series of albums for ARC Records, a 1973 album on the Marathon label, and then moved on to Broadland Records with three albums produced by Dallas Harms. The Broadland albums were filled with original tunes written by Artie MacLaren, with eight of the single releases from these packages earning national chart status.
Artie MacLaren's spiritual song "Where Would John Baptize Jesus" , a top 40 hit for him in Canada in 1979, was later covered by Nashville legend Porter Wagoner and by Canadian star Gary Buck.
