Biography:
A real Canadian and folk music treasure, Sam Larkin has written and produced some of the most colourful images ever written. It is easy to compare Sam's style to a cross between Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan, with a bit of Phil Ochs' dry wit thrown in for good measure, but that would be selling him short. This CD is a compilation of two very independent tapes Sam produced, as well as some newer material. Sam writes brilliant lyrics and matches them with moving, almost melancholy tunes that are instantly likable. "Children at Play" delivers one of the most haunting tunes and disturbing images ever unleashed on an unsuspecting public, but it works, and stays with the listener. It is sometimes difficult to sum up what Sam is getting at, but perhaps that is best. "Sally On" is another incredible track with great harmonica playing accompanying the guitar. Producers Don Kerr (who went on to work with Ron Sexsmith) and ex-Blue Rodeo member Bobbie Wiseman know how to allow Larkin's rich artistry to flow from track to track. Other highlights include the romantic "Mirabeau Bridge" and the rather odd "Marie." All in all, an excellent folk album.
