James Houston had been in the final incarnation of The Paupers when he assembled Houston in 1970. The band was discovered and produced by Greg Hambleton for his Tuesday label that year. Following the band’s demise in 1971, Houston himself would be signed to Yorkville Records for one single (“Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time”). The name "Houston" was apparently the front man and creative mainstay, responsible for penning most of the material. The quartet played on the Toronto club circuit for awhile before attracting the attention of the small Tuesday Records label. Their debut album was produced by Greg Hambleton and originally released by the small Canadian Tuesday label. Shelby Singleton somehow caught wind of the group, signing them to his independent SSS International label, reissuing their debut in the States (with a new, blander cover).
