Biography
Singer/songwriter Marty Gillan died at home in Chilliwack, BC, the result of ongoing skin cancer. He was born in Belfast, NI, and emigrated to Elliot Lake, ON in 1958 with his family, later moving look north to Geraldton, ON where he began his musical career in earnest.
At 20, Marty moved to BC and became a vital part of Vancouver's club circuit. He appeared on radio programs, and before long was host of a TV show, 'Banjo Parlor' on CTV.
When it was time to move on from music, Marty relocated to Chilliwack, BC and enjoyed a second career with Canada Post, enabling him to make new friends, both human and canine. In time, ill health signalled his final retirement. He found himself content to spend time with his cats, his books and his camera..and never lost his smile.
Marty was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Jack Gillan, but will be sorely missed by his sister Lynette, along with her husband Mike and nephews Jules and JJ. and by his younger sister Nikki Gillan.
Marty was cremated. At his request, there will be no service. Lynette will plant a tree for him and turn the ashes into new life where he can continue nurturing the earth.
