“Discovering talent in young musicians is one of the most exciting experiences I know. It satisfies on a variety of levels. Inspiring music to enjoy, of course, but also an affirmation of the lasting quality of the art form we appreciate. In this case, jazz. Every time I hear a group like FIFTH AVENUE for the first time, I’m reassured that the future of jazz is in good hands.

The Montreal Jazz Festival was the first occasion for me to hear this wonderful group of players. As a member of the jury for the ALCAN competitions, at the festival, I heard young musicians from all over Canada...a lot of talented performers, each uniquely individual and enjoyable. But, FIFTH AVENUE won the competition and our heartfelt wishes for continued success.

This group conveys a wonderful sense of commitment and determination to communicate their music that reaches out to the listeners. It was evident in the audiences I observed at their performances in Montreal. Rapport with the listener is an essential ingredient in the mix of abilities the musician must have, and I think it is the final factor that determines the future success of a promising musician.

I was also very impressed by the originality of the approach this group took in their compositions and arrangements. Fresh and new, and yet familiar and appealing at the same time. A great combination.

Naturally, I have to say something about the individual musicians that make up this group. As with any group, it’s the balance between the styles of the players and their individual personalities that make things click. It’s not enough just to have a talented musician. There has to be a fitting together of the individuals into a band, and then the group needs a leader to provide direction. At the core of FIFTH AVENUE is drummer, Paul Townsend. Although it isn’t that common for a drummer to be the leader of an ensemble, it’s the most fitting. In any performance, it’s the drummer who controls the dynamics, the feel, the interpretation of the music, making the drummer the de facto leader in every group. In this case, Paul is both the anchor and the guiding spirit of FIFTH AVENUE, and to see this breadth of talent in such a young musician is indeed inspiring. It was no coincidence that Paul was chosen the most outstanding individual musician in the competition in Montreal.

The most unique characteristic of the group is having two members, Al Matheson and Brad Turner, both of whom play piano and trumpet. I greatly enjoyed seeing them switch around, taking their respective turns at the keyboard and the horns. Each with his own style and approach, and between them covering a great variety of moods and interpretations. Their performances are fascinating to watch.

Bill Abbott on saxophone and bassist Shane Fawkes round out the group and provide the perfect complement to the overall balance of the group. For a group so young and together only for a relatively brief time, this is a surprisingly mature ensemble. Normally it takes a number of years of experience to develop this aspect of a group’s performance, and it is impressive to see what they have achieved so quickly.

This has been a wonderful year for FIFTH AVENUE. After being chosen as winners in the ALCAN competition, they have gone on to perform in France at the Paris Festival a few months later, and to begin preparations for this recording. It is heartening to see such great opportunities developing for these guys, and they truly deserve all the attention they are getting. We all benefit when talent like this gets so much support. I’m happy for the guys in FIFTH AVENUE, and proud of the ALCAN competition for providing such a great opportunity for these wonderful musicians. I’m especially pleased to have been there to see them at the competition. Discovering new talent at the beginning is a great thrill. Now’s your chance to discover FIFTH AVENUE. I’m sure you’ll have as much fun listening as I have.

“La découverte du talent chez de jeunes musiciens est parmi les expériences les plus passionnantes que je connaisse, procurant une satisfaction à divers niveaux: le plaisir d’entendre une musique inspirée, bien sûr, mais aussi l’affirmation de la qualité durable d’une forme artistique que l’on apprécie - en l’occurrence, le jazz. Chaque fois que j’entends jouer pour la première fois un groupe comme FIFTH AVENUE, je respire: l’avenir du jazz est assuré.

C’est au Festival international de jazz de Montréal que j’ai eu l’occasion d’entendre pour la première fois ce merveilleux groupe de musiciens. En ma qualité de membre du jury du concours Alcan organisé au Festival, j’ai entendu jouer de jeunes musiciens venus de tout le Canada. Tous avaient leur originalité propre, du talent et c’était un plaisir de les écouter. Mais c’est FIFTH AVENUE qui a remporté le concours ainsi que nos voeux les plus sincères pour la continuation de leur succès.

Ce qui est merveilleux, c’est la détermination avec lequel ce groupe s’emploie à vous faire partager sa musique, qui rayonne dans l’auditoire. Je l’ai constaté en observant le public lors des représentations du groupe à Montréal. Le contact avec l’auditoire est un élément essentiel de la palette d’aptitudes que doit posséder le musicien et c’est, je crois, le facteur qui en fin de compte détermine la future réussite d’un musicien prometteur.

J’ai également été frappé par l’originalité des compositions et des arrangements. Fraîche et originale, leur approche reste cependant accessible et attrayante: la formule est excellente.

Bien entendu, j’ai quelques mots à dire au sujet des musiciens individuels. Dans toute formation musicale, c’est l’équilibre entre les styles et les personnalités des différents interprètes qui produit le déclic magique. Il ne suffit pas de réunir des musiciens de talent. Il faut aussi que ces derniers s’intègrent harmonieusement en un groupe, et qu’un chef coordonne le groupe. Celui de FIFTH AVENUE est le batteur, Paul Townsend. Il est peu fréquent qu’un batteur prenne la direction d’un ensemble musical; quoi de plus logique, pourtant? Lorsque le groupe joue, c’est le batteur qui commande la dynamique, le “feeling”, l’interprétation de la musique et qui assume, de fait, la direction. Paul est non seulement l’élément de cohésion de FIFTH AVENUE mais son guide spirituel, et il est réjouissant de déceler une telle diversité de talents chez un musicien aussi jeune. Ce n’est pas par hasard qu’il a été désigné comme le musicien individuel le plus remarquable au concours de Montréal.

La caractéristique la plus originale du groupe est que deux de ses membres, Al Matheson et Brad Turner, jouent à la fois du piano et de la trompette. J’ai eu un immense plaisir à les voir échanger leurs rôles, passant alternativement du clavier aux cuivres, interprétant ainsi un large éventail de climats et de styles, chacun à sa manière propre. Il y a de quoi être fasciné en les regardant.

Bill Abbott au saxophone et Shane Fawkes à la contrebasse apportent le complément indispensable au parfait équilibre de l’ensemble. Il est d’ailleurs surprenant de découvrir que malgré sa formation relativement récente et la jeunesse de ses membres, ce groupe possède une remarquable maturité. Or cet atout ne se développe normalement qu’au sein d’un groupe qu’après un certain nombre d’années d’expérience, et on ne peut qu’admirer la précocité de FIFTH AVENUE à cet égard.

L’année qui se termine a été excellente pour FIFTH AVENUE. Après avoir gagné le concours ALCAN, le groupe a mis le cap sur la France quelques mois plus tard et a joué au Festival de Paris, avant de commencer à préparer le présent enregistrement. Ces gars ont le vent en poupe, et je m’en réjouis car ils méritent largement l’attention dont ils bénéficient. Lorsqu’un talent est ainsi encouragé, tout le monde y gagne. Je suis heureux pour les merveilleux musiciens de FIFTH AVENUE et je suis fier que le concours ALCAN leur ait offert un tremplin vers le succès. Et surtout, je suis ravi d’avoir pu les écouter en personne. La découverte de l’éclosion d’un nouveau talent est un moment absolument fantastique; c’est à vous qui allez découvrir FIFTH AVENUE, et je suis convaincu que vous les écouterez avec autant de plaisir que moi.
