Julie Doiron, born in 1972 in Moncton, New Brunswick, is a celebrated Canadian singer-songwriter renowned for her emotive vocals and introspective songwriting. She began her musical journey as a guitarist and bassist with the influential indie rock band Eric’s Trip. After the band’s dissolution in 1996, Doiron launched a solo career that quickly earned her recognition for her minimalist soundscapes and deeply personal lyricism.

Following her solo debut on Sub Pop, Doiron continued to refine her craft with the 1997 EP Will You Still Love Me?, released on Tree Records. This intimate collection showcased the foundation of her now-signature style: a delicate yet powerful union of vocals and guitar that evokes a timeless sense of yearning and emotional depth. This creative period marked a springboard for Doiron’s evolution as an artist and paved the way for her most critically acclaimed and accessible album, Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars.

Released in 1999, Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars was the result of a collaboration with the Ottawa-based indie rock quartet Wooden Stars. Known for their intricate and eclectic sound, the Wooden Stars brought a new energy and texture to Doiron’s introspective style. Their partnership helped her step out of her solitary, introspective comfort zone, introducing a more urgent and dynamic dimension to her music. The album combined elements of rock and jazz, drawing comparisons to Joni Mitchell’s early ’70s work, while maintaining a uniquely sparse and atmospheric aesthetic.

The warmth and emotional resonance of the album earned widespread critical acclaim and culminated in a Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year in 2000. It remains a standout in both Doiron’s and the Wooden Stars’ discographies, praised for its ability to translate the stark beauty of the Canadian winter into music filled with tenderness and connection.

Since this collaboration, Doiron has continued to release acclaimed solo albums and collaborate with various artists, cementing her legacy as one of Canada’s most respected indie musicians. Meanwhile, the Wooden Stars have pursued their own projects while occasionally reuniting for special performances, maintaining their reputation as a pivotal force in the Canadian indie rock scene.
