Biography:
Terry Roberts was a versatile country artist from Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, whose talent, charisma, and showmanship made him a standout performer. Growing up as the fourth of seven children in a "Country Lovin’" family, Terry's musical journey began when his mother gifted him a guitar at age eleven, paving the way for a career that blended country, rockabilly, and heartfelt songwriting.
In his early days, Terry performed and recorded as Terry Roberts and the Deans, releasing the rare and sought-after rockabilly/rock and roll single 'Oh Lonesome Me' b/w 'Janie' on Quality Records in 1958. The single featured a cover of Don Gibson’s 'Oh Lonesome Me' backed with 'Janie,' an original composition.
By 1960, Terry had relocated to Toronto, where he was signed as a recording artist and quickly rose to prominence. He formed the Terry Roberts Band alongside renowned guitarist Al Bruno, performing in several Ontario nightclubs and establishing himself as a leading figure in the Toronto country music scene. He shared the stage with legends such as Stonewall Jackson and Webb Pierce while also appearing on prominent television programs, including Country Music Hall on CTV and his own show on CKSO in Sudbury.
Terry’s debut album, Got the Urge for Goin’ (Arc Records, 1968), showcased hits like “Love of the Common People,” “Streets of Baltimore,” and Ian & Sylvia's Canadian anthem "Four Strong Winds." Known for his inventive arrangements, Terry refined classic country standards while contributing his own original material.
In the mid-1970s, Terry released his second album, Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home, on the Bermudian label Edmar (ELPS 1100). Known primarily for calypso and steelband releases, Edmar’s foray into country music with Terry’s album further highlighted his broad appeal and versatility as an artist.
Terry Roberts’ unique blend of country and rock influences, combined with his talent as a performer, arranger, and bandleader, has left an enduring legacy in Canadian music history. His work continues to be celebrated by collectors and fans of classic country and rockabilly music alike.
