Ruben Rivas was born in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico in 1933, into a well-to-do family. He was sent to Toronto by his father to study engineering in 1950, but soon gave it up in order to focus on his real passion - music. Rivas later formed his own band, consisting of himself on vocals and guitar, Ray Belmonte on drums, Darwyn Aitken on piano and Terry Forrester on bass. They performed frequently in clubs, hotels and resorts in Ontario and Quebec during the 1950s and 1960s. Rivas also appeared as a guest on Canadian television.
