Information/Write-up

There is a revival among the Inuit of northern Canada of a particular type of throat singing found only in this region of the world; it is a revival because priests forbade them from such singing for nearly a century. Women were able to kept it secret. Today, the revival is taking place as much among the older as the younger generations. The Inuit lost a large part of their traditions under the influence of Western civilization (as in so many places around the world). Throat singing is one of the few traditions they were able to maintain; it was originally a game practiced by women to entertain children during the long winter nights. The younger generations are learning from the elders, including the two elders on this CD, Alacie Tullaugaq and Lucy Amarualik, two excellent throat singers. They now have their own CD label, Inuktishuk Records.
-Bruno Deschênes, AllMusic

This album is entirely devoted to fourteen examples of traditional Inuit throat singing by two of the most respected tradition bearers in Povungnituk, Nunavik. Some of the songs imitate or evoke Arctic wildlife.
